While the wedding ring may seem like a simple thing – pick one out and place it on your spouse’s finger at the ceremony – there’s actually quite a bit to consider regarding the rings, both before and during the wedding. How do you pick the right ring? Will you have the rings blessed? Do you go with a traditional band or something more unique? How will the rings make it down the aisle on the day? We think about all these things here at Marry Me Ireland and we’ve looked up some modern trends for all things ‘ring’.
The Ring Itself
One of the newest trends today is bespoke wedding and engagement rings, meaning you get to design them yourself. This is a great opportunity to bond with your partner and create something intensely personal and significant for the two of you. You can build your ring from a wide variety of stones (shaped how you want them) and metals to create the style that best fits you and your partner. Many companies will even allow you to bring in your own stones that you’ve had passed down from a loved one or inscribe special messages on the inside of the bands.
Rose and yellow gold, platinum, diamonds, sapphires, stacked rings, halo settings, and vintage bands are all things “ring” in 2017. While you should absolutely have a ring that you’ll be happy with for the rest of your life, it’s important to remember costs (as the average cost of engagement rings across the country sits at about €2,500) and durability if you’re designing or buying your rings. Many materials run on the expensive side of the scale (platinum) and some stones may not be up to the wear-and-tear of everyday life (birthstones like opals). Palladium instead of platinum is excellent for couples who are looking to keep costs down, and if you’re looking for gemstone rings, sapphires and rubies are the most durable stones after diamonds.
During the Ceremony
To give the rings even more importance and allow their guests to participate in the celebration, some couples choose to include a ring warming ceremony either before or during the wedding. A ring warming ceremony is a simple ritual where the each of your guests (or family members if you prefer to keep it more intimate) holds the rings for a moment and says a silent blessing for love and happiness during your marriage. This custom can add an extra layer of meaning and joy to your wedding, but just remember to keep track of the rings! You can either tie them together, place them in an ornate box or bag, or have a someone keep a close eye on them while they move about the room.
How the ring gets down the aisle is also an important element in the wedding ceremony. Some couples choose to have their children or young family members bear the rings down the aisle; some employ man’s best friend for the task and tie the rings to their dog’s collar; and more daring couples have even had their rings flown in via birds of prey. It can sometimes be difficult to remove the rings when they’re attached to an animal, but so long as the rings stay together and make it down the aisle safely, feel free to be as creative as you want!
Whether you design the ring yourself, add an extra bit of flair at the wedding, or opt for no frills at all, make sure your wedding bands are something you’ll cherish for the rest of your lives. Our celebrants are happy to facilitate ring warming ceremonies or any other rituals that you want to include in your wedding.
