Wedding toasts are a long standing tradition a lot of couples choose to have at their wedding reception. It’s a celebration of the couple and a toast to their past and future life together. They are an opportunity for friends and family members to express their happiness and joy to the newlywed couple, in the presence of everyone they chose to be at their wedding. As well as this, they are an opportunity for the couple to share their happiness and thanks back to their guests. If they’re delivered successfully, speeches can be one of the most memorable parts of the day.
It’s very common for the parents of the bride and groom, the best man and the maid of honour to make a toast. Usually, the best man is the first person to make a toast, followed by the maid of honour if she chooses to. Traditionally, the bride and groom follow, thanking their guests for enjoying their special day with them. Lastly, the bride and groom’s parents may make a toast, welcoming the other family into their lives. This order is just a template to go on and the order of speeches and toasts can go in any order that suits you best, but plan it before so there’s some structure to the process.
A lot of people don’t feel comfortable getting up and talking in front of large groups, so it is important not to just assume certain members of your wedding party will make a toast. If they’re extremely nervous the toast will come off awkward and uncomfortable, so make sure they want to.
Wedding toasts should be light, humerous and sentimental. The best ones are planned out in advance, filled with personal stories and references, and not too long. Even if you know it off by heart, it’s a good idea to write it down in case nerves get the better of you and you go blank on the day.
