A lot of people choose Ireland as their wedding destination, whether they call it home or not. Whether they have family here, they grew up here, or they simply just love the country, Ireland is a very popular spot to say ‘I do’. Read on for some advice when planning an Irish wedding from overseas.
Sign the Papers in your Home Country
Organising a wedding ceremony and a reception is stressful enough without having to worry about the legal stuff on top of that. There’s a complicated process in place if you want to legally marry in Ireland if you’re not an Irish citizen, so we’d recommend strongly considering signing your marriage cert in your country of residence, before or after your Irish wedding. This will in no way take away from how special your day is, or how meaningful your ceremony is. If anything it will improve it by taking away all the boring paperwork.
Stick to your Budget
Irish wedding’s cost on average €25,000 last year. This may be more or less expensive than the average wedding in the country you live in. You’ll need to take flights and accommodation into account as well. However, weddings by no means have to be that expensive. We cater for all sizes, from small weddings for just the couple, to big extravagant weddings with hundreds of guests, both are equally as special in their own way. Also keep in mind, that you may have considerably less guests if you don’t have family and friends living in Ireland, so that will help to keep costs down.
Skype is your Best Friend
Gone are the days where you have to run up long phone bills when calling abroad. Skype is just as, if not more, accessible. The majority of vendors involved in planning your wedding will have access to Skype or if not, then email, to keep in contact with them and assist with planning from abroad. We have daily Skype calls in the Marry Me Ireland office organising, planning, and writing ceremonies for this exact reason.
To avoid added stress, when you finally make your way to Ireland, keep a record of all your wedding plans. This way there will be evidence if you have trouble with vendors or will help if your own memory isn’t the best.
The internet can be invaluable when planning a wedding, from home or abroad. Make sure to double check reviews and ratings though and don’t just use the first flower site you find or the caterer nearest the venue.
Expect the Unexpected
Lastly, no matter how well you plan your wedding, always leave room for something to go wrong. Considering your planning your wedding from abroad, it is more likely to have a few hiccups along the way. However, just remember that everything will sort itself out in the end.
