Cutting Down Wedding Costs Without Sacrificing Style

Weddings are expensive and it’s definitely a struggle deciding on a budget that wont leave you penniless but will still give you a wedding to remember. There’s loads of little ways you can save on your wedding without having to sacrifice style. You can still have the wedding of your dreams with just a few alternatives.

The Day

Saturdays are by far the most expensive day to have a wedding. There’s huge demand for weddings on a Saturday due to the fact your guests wont have to take any days off work. However, if you switch to a Friday or a Sunday the price of your wedding will significantly decrease, it will decrease even further if you switch to a week day.

The Month

June to September is peak wedding season so weddings will be a good bit more expensive if you want to get married during this time. On the other end of the scale January and February tend to be the cheapest months to get married with March and April being slightly more expensive.

Flowers and Decor

Don’t waste money on things your guests won’t fully appreciate. If you are not having a sit down dinner don’t use up your budget on extravagant centre pieces and instead concentrate on decorating areas that guests will fully notice the flowers and decor.

Check what flowers are in season at the time you are marrying, this will make a big difference in how much you are spending. Roses are in season all year round and if you really want to budget, carnations are a very cost effective floral choice. Ask your florist for cheap flower fillers. Bear grass can be up to 70% cheaper than some other types of greenery.

Food and Drinks

Sit down dinners are usually the most expensive option. Check out our article ‘Food Glorious Food! Different Catering Styles for your Wedding‘ for cheaper alternatives that are just as delicious.

Like food, drink can take a big chunk out of your budget. A full open bar is definitely not a necessity, instead just offer free wine and have your guests pay for beer and hard liquor. Alternatively, you can set a budget on your bar, after that your guests can pay for their own drinks. Choose house wines instead of more expensive options and keep the wedding toast to just the bride and groom. This way you can save hundreds on champagne.

Cake and Desserts

Cardboard or plastic layers on a cake are often used to create the illusion of a bigger cake for a portion of the cost. Stick to vanilla or lemon flavours over more expensive options like red velvet. Instead of sit down desserts you can opt for a candy buffet or have servers deliver the desserts cocktail style; this way they can portion control.

Music

A DJ is going to be cheaper than a full band but if you have your heart set on live music look for local bands that haven’t made it big yet. Alternatively, you can stream music from an iPod for part of the night to cut costs.
